GPS monitoring of Mt. Everest show a 3 cm (about 1 inch) shift (southwest) in the mountain's position due to the Nepal earthquake. Chinese scientists say that the earthquake moved it in roughly the opposite direction of its normal movement of about 4 cm per year to the northeast. The mountain moved back to where it was 9 months ago!
The event, also known as the Gorkha earthquake, struck on April 25, 2015 and had a magnitude 7.8 (8.1 according to some Chinese geophysicists).
